What Actually Happens to Y Combinator Companies

  Of 1,148 companies from YC's first twelve years, 19 went public. The more useful numbers are the other 1,129. Getting into Y Combinator is treated as the finish line. It is the starting line, and the data on what comes after is more interesting than the acceptance rate. We built this from YC's own public listing of 6,215 companies as of September 13, 2026. YC marks every company with a status: still active, acquired, inactive or public. Grouping those statuses by the year of each batch gives about the clearest picture available of what happens to a YC company over time The first twelve years Start with the companies that have had the most time: every batch from Summer 2005 through Summer 2016. That is 1,148 companies, each with at least a decade behind it. 358 were acquired. 31 percent. 427 are inactive. 37 percent. 344 are still operating. 30 percent. 19 went public. Under 2 percent.
