Orange County's 110,088 Business Listings, by the Numbers

One in five local business listings in Orange County shows no website and no email address. That is 21,074 of the 110,088 listings we counted in the open map data that apps and websites can build on.

We pulled every Orange County place from the September 23, 2026 release of Overture Maps, an open dataset of places around the world, and counted what appeared on each local business listing: a phone number, a website, an email address or a Facebook page.

A phone number is the most common way to reach a business in this data, and an email is the least common. Only 481 listings include an Instagram link, compared with 35,498 with a Facebook page. In this dataset, Facebook accounts for almost all social links.

Dental and medical listings are the thinnest. They have the lowest website share of any named industry, 71%, and the highest share with neither a website nor an email, 28%. That is more than one in four listings in the county's second-largest industry group. And 2,700 dental and medical listings, 15% of the group, show no website, no email and no phone at all. That is about two in five of the county's 6,855 listings with no website, email or phone. Some of those may be entries for individual doctors inside larger practices, which this data cannot tell apart.

Restaurants are the most complete. Nine in ten show a website, and only 9% show neither a website nor an email.

Salons, gyms and private schools list email the most. Salons and beauty lead at 39%, then fitness at 38% and education and childcare at 37%. Salons also lead on Facebook, at 68% of listings.

Auto shops list a phone almost every time. Auto repair listings show a phone 98% of the time, and a third of them list an email, well above the county's 22%.

Irvine has the most listings in the county and the lowest email share among the twelve largest cities, at 16%. Garden Grove has the highest share with neither a website nor an email, at 24%. Brea and Huntington Beach have the lowest, at 16% and 17%.

What kind of email

Of the 24,539 listings with an email address:

  • 10,424 (42%) use an address on the same domain as the business's website.
  • 3,970 (16%) use another business domain.
  • 10,145 (41%) use a free email service such as Gmail.

Industries use free email very differently. Among listings that show an email, salons use a free service most, at 77%, followed by auto repair at 55% and restaurants at 49%. Manufacturers and professional services lean the other way: only 18% and 25% of their listed emails are free addresses.

Where the listings come from

Overture builds its places from several data providers and keeps one source for each place it matches across them. For these 110,088 Orange County listings, about 48% came from BrightQuery, 30% from Meta, 14% from Microsoft and 7% from Foursquare, with a few hundred from other providers.

Our read

A listing is often the first thing a customer, or software working for a customer, finds about a business. A listing with no website and no email leaves one way in, the phone, and 6,855 Orange County listings in this data do not even show that.

The countywide average hides a sharp industry gap. Dental and medical practices, which depend on new patients finding them, trail every other named industry on websites. If we ran a practice here, that is the first thing we would check.

On email, a Gmail address works, but on a business listing it can read as less established than an address on the business's own domain. That is our opinion, not something this data measures.

What to check this week

1. Look yourself up where customers look. Search your business on Google Maps, Apple Maps, Bing Maps, Yelp and Facebook. Check the name, phone, website and hours on each one.

2. List your own website, not your Facebook page. In our count, a Facebook, Instagram, Yelp or Linktree link did not count as a website. A page you own is the one place where every detail is yours to set.

3. Add an email address on your own domain. If customers can only call, the ones who prefer to write will go somewhere they can.

4. Keep the listings you control complete. Meta, Microsoft and Foursquare supplied about half of these listings, so the details on your Facebook page, your Bing Places listing and your Foursquare listing are worth keeping current. Your Google Business Profile does the same job on Google's maps.

5. Check what Overture has on your business. Overture's Explorer map, at https://explore.overturemaps.org, shows the data in each release. Browse to your address and check what your listing says.

How we counted

  • Source. Overture Maps Foundation, places theme, release 2026-09-23.1, pulled on September 26, 2026. The data is open and free to use.
  • Area. Places with Orange County ZIP codes. We dropped ZIP codes that sit in Riverside County.
  • What we removed. Places marked permanently closed, places with no name, and duplicates with the same name and phone number. We also left out government offices, public schools and a short list of categories outside our work.
  • What we set aside. 8,412 chain and brand locations, because this post is about local owners, and 16,392 places with an existence confidence below 0.5 or no category. Overture's confidence score estimates how likely a place is to exist.
  • What counts. A listing "has a website" when its website field holds a link other than a Facebook, Instagram, Yelp or Linktree page. It "has an email" when its email field holds a valid address. The restaurant group leaves out some cuisines outside our work, so it is smaller than the county's full restaurant count.
  • What this is not. It is a count of what one open dataset shows, not a survey of businesses. A listing without a website here may still have one that the data does not know about. Overture's own documentation says its places contain duplicates, a high share of junk records and incomplete details, and the confidence filter only addresses the junk.
